ANZAC…….. Differently in 2020
On Saturday 25 April 2020 and in the social lockdown of COVID-19, a small group of community with social distancing measures in place and lead by Brian Hendricks, informally held a commemoration service at 1100 hours in honour of our fallen ANZACS.
The bagpipes played and stirred memories in a hauntingly beautiful way by John Keating. Then the ode was spoken by Brian and then the opportunity for all of us to reflect upon the meaning of ANZAC Day through a one minutes’ silence, respecting and remembering the sacrifice of our fallen soldiers in all of our world conflicts and the bravery of all who took part. The service concluded with a stirring rendition of The Last Post by Siua Taumoefolau on the bugle.
The wreaths had been laid upon the Cenotaph. Jack Forbes a well-known and respected elder statesman of Robinvale, reluctantly agreed to pose for a photo by the Cenotaph with his medals worn on his jacket made for a very proud moment to us all!
So COVID you may have taken the opportunity to interrupt community events in our town but you could not take away the meaning and importance of remembering our men and women of service and their sacrifice to keep us free and living lives that we do today……
